I think Dirk Lance now writes music for video games (cool).ĭirk Lance's band Willie's Nerve Clinic is actually great, and has a a more raw feel than when he was in Incubus, just sounds like a 'good fun' band. Their subsequent albums have been hit and miss, I think Light Grenades is there weakest, and it's hard to disguise the fact that their drop in quality coincided with B.K. joining or whether Incubus apart from Dirk changed which led him to leave. The question remains in my mind though whether the change in Incubus was triggered by Dirk Leaving and B.K. But back to Ben Kenney, he was using a plec (pick) and generally I wasn't impressed, not with Ben Kenney or the album as a whole.Īs time has gone on I've realised that there was a sharp turn in Incubus' sound at that point which was made by the entire band, Brandon's vocals were a little more shout, Einziger's writing was purposefully less 'precise' and 'clean' sounding and DJ Kilmore had started using more keyboards. When i heard Megalomania it was clear that it wasn't just the bass that had changed it's feel, Mike Einziger had clearly taken a turn for the indie, swapping his PRS out for a Fender's (Jaguar etc.). This concerned me as I like the idea of bassist being bassists and not guitarists turned bassists as i do think that there's a totally different mindset required. When Dirk left, i was worried to hear that Ben Kenney had joined as the only thing i'd hear about him was that he was a guitarist. These are still two of my favourite albums of all time, for all of the instrumentation. When we get to Make Yourself and Wish You Were Here he came into his own and matured in his playing and learnt to write in a more laid-back manner with deep smooth grooves with an element of the avant garde.

and his funky lines on Fungus Amongus are fantastic and you can tell his enthusiasm for Bass as an instrument, but you can see some of the naivety in his writing as he is all about playing and not giving much space. His slaps and snaps and dirty drum and bass grooves on S.C.I.E.N.C.E.

I've been an avid and fanatical listener and follower of Incubus since my early teens, every member of the band being ludicrously talented at their specific field, created genuinely unique, recognisable music.īecause of this Dirk Lance has always been one of the bassist's i've been exposed to the most. "You have basically just focused in on the biggest musical upset of my life, and that's not really an exagerration.
